The first conversation was about his intention to earn a PhD in metaphysics. He described an online course as, "not just paying someone to say that you know what you're doing. You have to actually do the work." The course was to span two years and applied individuals' interest in spirituality with its peer-reviewed counterparts, several writen documents, and hours of sprawling research on the Internet.

He agreed to meet with me and talk about the PhD in a hideaway cafe in the Tenderloin. The document that was created was informed by his biography, beliefs, and contradictions, each unraveled and edited in order to chase a phantom thread connecting them all.
