Jean-Luc Godard described Roger Corman as working "through the Hollywood system but not within it." Corman's role as introducing many future-Hollywood names included the young Jack Nicholson. The namesake Cry Baby Killer, is a 70 minute foray into late 1950's social conventions set to a jazz soundrack. Nicholson stars as a high school heartbreak who inadvertently finds himself in a hostage situation, playing the role of gun-toter. As police pressure builds around the small storeroom, the pressure internally builds via every passenger plane's worst nightmare: a crying resident baby. Nicholson is faced with the decision to shoot his way out of the storeroom and into a gleamy life of crime or be a nice guy and get the baby some food.
Of the 70 minutes, the lead actor is on screen only five minutes. Not surprisingly, through these five minutes one can follow the entire course of the shabby story. What remains of the film--cut aways, long pauses, establishing shots--buttresses every identifying acting feature and persona of Jack Nicholson. His bulldog retort from A Few Goodmen is shadowed by a window-breaking version of The Shining's "Here's Johnny!" et al.
Cry Baby Killer Redux imagined an entire acting career remade within the confines of a single movie excerpt. Each scene pays homage to a different film, confounding the appropriate line's delivery as a non-sequitur.
