During Los Angeles' glacial past, a mammoth became trapped in a tar that perennially fluctuated from solid to viscous fluid. The dead or dying mammoth became a fatal temptation for the dire wolves that populated the area. Each wolf's attempt to reach the forbidden morsel guaranteed its own fate as unreachable carrion, tempting other predators into the trap. As the carcasses degraded by untameable bacteria, they further contributed to the tar pit that made their remains unreachable.

Over 400 dire wolf remains have been excavated.
